Tips for Best Results

  • Start with scoping — Get the CDE scope right before auditing anything else. If your scope is wrong, you are auditing the wrong systems and missing the ones that matter.
  • Verify tokenization end-to-end — Do not trust documentation alone. Inspect the DOM to confirm card fields are in processor iframes. Check network traffic to confirm no PAN passes through your server. Grep logs for card number patterns.
  • Check what is NOT there — Missing controls (no MFA, no logging, no segmentation) are harder to spot than broken controls. Use the checklists in each phase and verify every checkbox.
  • Search for card data patterns — Run grep -rn "[0-9]\{13,16\}" src/ to find potential PANs in code, config, or test fixtures. Check for Luhn-valid numbers in logs, databases, and error tracking.
  • Read your processor's integration guide — Stripe, Adyen, and Braintree each have specific PCI guidance documents. Know which integration type you use and its exact SAQ implications.
  • Log review is non-negotiable — PCI requires daily log review. If nobody is reviewing logs, it is an automatic finding. Verify that alerting exists for suspicious payment events.
